Autonomous Governance - Transformative Pathways

  • ■A case-study video telling the inspirational story of the Wampis Nation in Peru. The Wampis control and manage extensive Amazonian territories that are not only some of the most biodiverse areas on the planet but are also some of the areas most at threat from extractive industries, plantations and logging, as well as the impacts of climate change. In response to these threats, in recent years an innovative form of governance has emerged – the Autonomous Territorial Government (GTA), rooted in traditional governance within Wampis ancestral territory in order to tackle the threats and challenges faced by their peoples today.

Through this the Wampis are confronting destructive industry, championing culturally-rooted development, and protecting vast areas of rainforest on their territories. The film will not only show how these indigenous led forms of governance have been set up and strengthened, but also the gains made. These include the mapping and zoning of their ancestral territories, geo-referenced monitoring and protection mechanisms being put in place, and youth leadership schools set up to ensure the emergence of a next generation of leaders who can take forward the GTA.
